Care Tips for Wigs & Hair Extensions

This simple tips will help you take good care of your wigs or hair extensions, ensuring that they look vibrant and live for a long period of time.

Detangling

Make sure you comb the hair after each wash and everyday. When detangling the hair, please start from the ends and work up little by little to the root. Hold the base with the other hand to keep it from shedding or causing too much root tension. For curly hair, if the hair ever becomes tangled you should never try to untangle the hair while dry. You should only untangle the hair after it has been sprayed with a conditioner.

Avoid using shine products on the root area as it may cause premature shedding.

Brushing Your Wigs and Hair Extensions

Brushing should be done carefully to avoid root tension. Do not attempt to brush through the attachment unless using a very soft 100% boar Brush. Extreme tugging may result in the loss of your own hair.

Blow Drying

Take care not to lift the lace front wig when round brushing and drying your hair. Brush gently toward face. Do not brush or tug abruptly when drying hair. Press firmly around perimeter after blow drying.

Sleeping

Braid the hair when going to sleep, swimming or exercising. You MUST untangle the hair prior to braiding. NEVER sleep on wet hair, your hair must be completely dry before going to sleep as sleeping on wet lace wig WILL cause hair to be very matted.

Dry Ends

To keep hair from becoming dry, you may apply a leave in conditioner or olive oil two to three times weekly prior to shampooing. Remember that the hair on wigs or extensions do not have the benefit of your own natural scalp oils, so oilve oil and leave in conditioners will help replace those necessary oils in the hair.

Chlorine and Salt Water

Chlorine and salt water have been known to damage hair used in wigs and hair extensions. Chlorinated pools, Jacuzzis, saunas and ocean water can cause irreparable damage to the hair that I am purchasing and/or wearing and that my seller can not be held responsible if I decide to ignore such warnings. I have been advised not to expose my wig or hair extensions to chlorinated and/or salt waters and do at my own risk.

Shedding

Some hair comes sheds easier than others. Curly and longer hair will commonly shed hair more rapidly than a short hair. Shedding of hair is considered very normal.

Slippage

During the life of your lace front wig hairstyle, your lace front wig may slip. To help avoid this constantly apply firm pressure on the adhesive area, especially after showering. This will help the attachment stay
firmly attached to the scalp area. In the event of your lace front wig slipping or lifting, you can successfully re-attach using a small amount of adhesive, wait 4 minutes for it to cure, and then press firmly.

Matting

Each morning, lean your head forward and use a soft brush and gently brush your hair starting at the ends of the hair and working your way up to the root area.

Chemical Treatments

We do NOT recommend that you TINT, COLOR, PERM OR APPLY ANY EXTRA CHEMICAL TREATMENTS to the hair because in most cases it has already been chemically treated.

Also please be extra careful with blonde and other light colored hair. They are more chemically processed than dark hair. Therefore, we will not be responsible for the outcome.

All of the Following Can Cause Premature and Excessive Hair Loss:

Excessive Combing or Brushing

This will ultimately break off hair and cause premature thinning or shedding.

Unattended Matting and Tangling

Left uncorrected, excessive matting and tangling that is then removed forcefully will tighten the matted hair and tear out the hair.

Friction

From pillows or overly aggressive shampooing will break off the hair and thin and tear out the hair.

Conditioners Remaining In the Root Area

Probably the single largest factor creating major, ongoing, irreversible hair loss. Conditioners that are allowed to be absorbed onto the base and gather around the root system will ultimately prevent the root system from pivoting 360 degrees allowing for hair loss in your hair replacement. Conditioners must be rinsed out completely to avoid the breakage of the root system.

Clients with Extra Curly or Wavy Hair

For wavy or curly hair, we recommend you wet the hair every morning with a leave in conditioner. The hair is very beautiful, but requires daily maintenance. The hair should always have a level of solution in it, so that it can keep its curly texture and moist feel.

How to Wash Wigs and Lace Units

Shampooing and conditioning the hair keeps it moisturized and damage free. It will prolong the life of your wig and lace units while providing it with the nutrients it needs to survive for as long as possible.

We suggest that you shampoo and condition your wig every two weeks at minimum. Please wash the hair immediately after swimming, going to a spa, exercising, etc.

Dirt and sweat accumulate and create tangles. Excessive use of leave-in conditioners and other hair products will create a build up on the hair and will cause it to tangle faster. If the hair feels dry or heavy with build up, wash it with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

  1. If your unit is applied with attached to your head with adhesive, always remove the wig with lace front citrus remover carefully.
  2. Once removed, clean the wig of any residue tape and/or glue. You may use the citrus remover or for more stubborn adhesive use 99% alcohol.
  3. Now fill the sink with lukewarm water and add a moisturizing shampoo. (We recommend Joico–K PAK , Joico Moisture Recovery, Fredric Fekkai, or Goldwell Kerasilk Shampoo and Conditioner.) Then swirl the shampoo around with your hand.
  4. Now put your wig in the sink and run your fingers through the hair from top to bottom to make sure the shampoo is evenly distributed without rubbing twisting the hair.
  5. Then rinse the shampoo off with water and empty the sink of the shampoo water.
  6. Now fill the sink with lukewarm water and add a moisturizing conditioner. (We recommend Joico–K PAK , Joico Moisture Recovery, Fredric Fekkai, or Goldwell Kerasilk Shampoo and Conditioner.) Then swirl the conditioner around with your hand.
  7. Then return your wig to the sink and run your fingers through the hair from top to bottom to make sure the conditioner is evenly distributed without rubbing twisting the hair.
You may repeat the shampoo or conditioner process as needed.
  8. Now empty the sink and refill it with clean lukewarm water and let the wig or lace units sit for 10 minutes.
  9. Then take the wig and pat dry with a towel. Place the wig on a mannequin & put a detangling solution or a leave in conditioner on the wig. The hair should be soft & able to gently comb through the wig.
  10. Once the hair is manageable, let the hair sit & air dry. If you are in a rush, you can blow dry the wig on low heat. Make sure to avoid heat coming into direct contact with the lace, the heat from the blow dryer should only touch the actual hair.

When possible allow 24 hour before reapplying the wig.

How to Care For Remy Hair Extensions

Here are some tips to help you care for your Remy extensions, and this way make them look their best on you and last you longer too.

1. Make sure you brush the hair daily. Start at the ends and work your way up to your scalp with an extension brush. If your hair is wavy or curly, we recommend a wide tooth comb instead of a brush.

2. A good leave in hair treatment can keep the hair from drying and maintain it soft and healthy. To keep the hair from drying and tangling, we reccomend to apply leave in conditioner after washing.

You can make a leave-in conditioner at home by diluting conditioner (10%) with water (90%). Apply the mixture lightly onto your hair and brush the hair from the end to the top near the scalp.

Although it is important to apply leave-in conditioners, remember not to use too much otherwise it will create build up and make the hair feel dirty and too heavy.

If the hair feels heavy with too much product, make sure to wash it with a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner.

3. Before washing the hair, spray mixture of conditioner and water and brush the hair from bottom to the top. You must gradually wet the hair and brush it gently before you completely wash the hair. If the hair is very dry and a lot of water is added at once, there is a possibility that hair will swell up like a sponge and tangle! Therefore, it is important to gradually wet the hair and brush it.

4. After wetting the hair, add shampoo and conditioner and brush thoroughly. Be sure to wash and brush the hair in one direction. Rinse the hair completely with water and towel dry. It is best to air dry the hair but you can also ok to blow-dry.

5. Washing and conditioning the hair keeps it moisturized and damage free. It will prolong the life of your beautiful hair while providing it with the nutrients it needs to survive for as long as possible.

We suggest that you shampoo and condition the hair at least once a week with lukewarm water to maintain your beautiful hair.

(We recommend Joico–K PAK , Joico Moisture Recovery, Fredric Fekkai, or Goldwell Kerasilk Shampoo and Conditioner.)

6. You must not sleep with your Remy hair down. Make sure the hair is completely dry before going to bed. NEVER SLEEP ON WET HAIR. It is best to braid the hair and tie it up with a satin scarf or bonnet. It is also important that you braid your hair when going to swim or exercise (please make sure to untangle the hair before making the braids).

7. When swimming, always wear a cap to prevent prolong exposure to chlorine or salt water which causes the hair to tangle. Always wash the hair right away with shampoo and conditioner after swimming in both types of water. When going to the spa, brush out  the hair, completely, and wrap it in a cold wet towel.

8. Avoid or keep to a minimal any TINT, COLOR, PERM OR APPLY ANY EXTRA CHEMICAL TREATMENTS because the Remy extensions has already been chemically treated. Blonde and other light colored hair are more chemically processed than dark hair, so avoid chemicals process on especially in light colored Remy extension.. Therefore, they are more vulnerable to any additional chemical treatments and we cannot be held responsible for the outcome.

Special Instructions for Strand by Strand Remy Extensions

– Do not shampoo for the first two days after application.
– Always brush with a loop brush. Brush row by row, ends to roots.
– To avoid breakage of your Keratin Tipped bonds; towel dried them.
– Keratin Tipped bonds (approximately 1” from the bond & scalp) should not come into contact with any heat (blow dryers, hot rollers, curling & straightening irons), heat will weaken the bond.
– Keratin Tipped bonds may be weakened when exposed to constant damp environments such as steam rooms and saunas.

Hair Types, and Descriptions

Oriental Hair– Is good to use when wanting straight hair since it is thicker denier and straighter than other types of hair. Oriental hair is also used for most blondes due to the fact that it can withstand more processing than most human hair types.

Indian Hair– Is a softer finer denier, great for dark colors due to less processing and for clients with fine textured hair.

Cuticle Hair– is hair with the cuticle still attached. The hair is processed a certain way and vented in a special way to help pertain tangling. Due to the high quality and the procedures of processing this hair there is an additional charge when requesting cuticle hair.

Fiber:- there is different types of fibers that can be requested, when ordering custom.

Synthetic Fiber- a fiber made to resemble human hair. Heat may never be applied to synthetic fiber or it will cause it to melt.

Color Hi-Lite color Distribution- Is the blending and sections of different hair color distributed throughout the system. The percentage of highlights you want in the system determines the spacing of the highlights and the size of the highlight spots.

Gray-  Gray hair pieces and wigs are available but usually they are made with a lower quality of human hair or even synthetic hair since so much chemical treatment is required to make the hair such a light color.

Type of Binding in hair pieces– The binding is the finishing around the perimeter of the unit. Some units, such as all lace bases do not have binding. When ordering a custom made system with a binding you need to choose the type of binding your prefer and where you would like the binding to start and end. Do you want it temple to temple in the front only, temple to temple back only or all around the perimeter of the system?

Types of Human Extension Hair

Most of the hair used for making hair extensions, hair pieces, and wigs sold in the US is sourced through India. Much of it is collected from monasteries located throughout the country. The largest and most famous monastery is in the south of India. Indian women donate their hair as an offering to their God as a sign of modesty. It is their understanding that it will be sold by the monks for a substantial sum of money that will be used to finance schools, hospitals and other publicly favored facilities. But not all hair that finds its way onto the market is the same.

GRADE: Cuticle, Non – Cuticle, Virgin, Processed, Single Drawn, Double Drawn, Remy and Non – Remy

SOURCE:

  • MALAYSIAN HAIR (aka Asian Hair) a thick and coarse fiber that is naturally straight and dark brown to black in color.
  • INDIAN HAIR (aka Italian Hair) a variety of fiber types from fine and straight, medium thick with body wave and curly to thick coarse hair. “Italian hair” is actually Indian hair that has been processed in Italy or Spain and then sold at premium prices. Indian hair is popular to use for custom made hairpieces because it can be made to resemble European hair. Although prices for Remy Indian hair can sometimes increase every 2-3 months, it is still available in the less expensive non – Remy form. The Indian hair fiber is small in diameter compared to Chinese hair and after chemical processing can feel and look just like European hair. Finally, a great attribute of Indian hair is that it comes in a full range of textures and body.
  • EUROPEAN HAIR (aka Russian Hair, Caucasian Hair) a fine to medium density fiber that is naturally straight to slight wave and available in a variety of natural colors, most commonly dark blonds to medium browns. The Virgin colors will often be streaked with lighter shades or the ends will be much lighter than the roots due to weathering.

SINGLE DRAWN HAIR (aka Cuticle Hair, Virgin Hair, and Remy Hair) a bundle of hair, no matter its origin or grade that appears like a ponytail because all the short lengths of regrowth hair are kept in the bundle. Many a novice buyer thinks the shorter lengths are split ends. Different manufacturers sell bundles of hair in single drawn form, but sometimes split the percentage of short hair and sell at a higher rate. They may decide to take out perhaps 50% of the shortest lengths and leave the rest in the bundle.

DOUBLE DRAWN HAIR (aka Non – Cuticle Hair, Processed Hair, and Non – Remy Hair) a bundle of hair, no matter its origin or grade that is all one length. There are no shorter lengths of hair present, Non – Remy Processed hair is usually sold double drawn. The term refers to a mechanical process that draws out all the shorter lengths from a bundle, and then draws again to realign the top of the bundle.
